How to Publish an Ebook the Easy way

Publishing your book as an ebook is a little bit more complicated as
ebooks are completely different to print.

Check out the guidelines for publishing on the smashwords style guide on their website; http://www.smashwords.com this guide can be downloaded for free. When I was going through it, I found reams of jargon that was difficult to follow but maybe you might have better success than I had.

This is the shorter version:

1. First, go back into Microsoft Word where you have the file stored
and click on format then click on paragraph.
2. For alignment, click left.
3. Indentatation: click left -0.1cm.
4 Move across to the right on same page and click special, then first line.
5. Under that you will see the word By, click 0.5cm.
6. Then set the body text as normal.
7. Basically, you need to remove all page numbers.
8. There must be very few blank spaces.
9. Each chapter must follow on from the other with a minimum of two
lines between the chapter and paragraph previous to it.
10. Click the show-hide button on Microsoft Word, it’s in the shape of
a p turned backwards; this will indicate if any mistakes are made, an
arrow will appear if you are doing it wrong and a p turned backwards
if the indentations are correct. ( NB. This has to be done correctly
otherwise Smashwords will not publish the book ).
11. Once all this is done, upload your file and cover image and it is
published straightaway.
12. You set your own price
13. Smashwords will review the book for their premium catalogue; once
approved this will enable you to sell your book worldwide as an ebook.

Ebooks can be downloaded to Kindle and various other devices. Every author is given the opportunity to enable free sampling of their book; how much they want to give is entirely their choice. You need to provide a cover for the ebook otherwise it will not be accepted. Ebooks are the gateway for new authors to overcome the stumbling block of conventional publishing and establish themselves in the literary world.

Publishing ‘The Hippity Dippity Witch’

ImageWhen I found out about FeedARead at my writers’ group, I was so excited and you will be too!  FeedARead are a publishing company based in England funded by the Arts Council to enable new authors around the world get their work published and gain recognition. The books are of professional standard and of high quality. Once you are registered, the publishing process begins immediately. You will be asked for your details: the title of the book, the number of pages, the size of the book plus a brief synopsis. FeedARead will then ask you to upload the manuscript according to the guidlines they supply; they will provide you with a template as a guide. As mine was a children’s book, it took a bit longer to upload as it contained a number of illustrations and they had to be of a lower resolution so the manuscript could be uploaded on to the FeedARead system. Following this, you will then be required to upload the book cover according to the template provided.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it as these steps are relatively straightforward and guidelines are provided. It is amazing how clear and simple the process is and would definitely recommend this to anyone going down the self publishing route. The FeedARead team have specific guidelines for manuscript submissions and anything that is not adhered to will just have to be repeated again until the entire book is uploaded correctly but again as I said already, this is nothing to be alarmed about.

You will be asked to provide the price of the book, according to what you feel is appropriate for the size and length but if in doubt, the FeedARead team will recommend the royalties and price for you, each author has the choice on whether they wish to accept this recommendation or not or choose the royalty themselves. The team take a small percentage of each book sold. For me it is only sixty five cent per book. Payment is made through Paypal so do ensure you have a paypal account and royalties are paid twice yearly; April and October. Authors are also informed of the printing costs which is at a reduced rate for each book ordered. My book costs me four euro sixteen cent per print but each book is different, some will be more expensive than others.

Once the manuscript has been fully uploaded, it then takes approximately ten to twenty days for the book to be published. The FeedARead team will inform authors when this happens to enable you to order a copy to proofread. Read through the book thoroughly for mistakes as the team do not offer proof reading or editing services. If you wish to make a revision, a small fee will incur but nothing to get too excited about. Each author then as the choice of selling their books privately to be ordered just by them or having it distributed; there is a charge for this service but it is not very big and well worth it if you wish your book to be available to all online bookstores throughout the world! For Ireland it is 100 euro.

Finally I would like to add that this is a great opportunity for new and aspiring authors. Not only is publishing free but if your book is fortunate enough to be among the top ten bestseller list, you also get the chance to have the first three chapters of your book critiqued by top publishers. I am thrilled with my book, don’t pay big bucks to vanity publishers, check out FeedARead.com

Hope for new Authors.

Hi folks, welcome to my new blog. I know there are a lot of you out there who have put in considerable time and effort writing a great book and cannot get it published. Well I was in the same boat, sent my manuscript out to dozens of publishers and got rejected time and time again. You say to yourself then, well maybe I’m not that good or I’ll try harder next time but the truth is; it is very difficult to break through the barrier of publishing houses. If you are not previously published, not well-known, haven’t won several literary awards then chances of getting accepted are limited.

When I wrote my first children’s book, I was so excited and determined to get it published no matter what. I put an awful lot of effort into the book, not to mention the cost of illustrations and if all else failed and I couldn’t find an agent or publisher, I was ready to head down the self-publishing route.  Hell, rain, or snow my book was getting out there, I wanted children to read it and enjoy it as much as I did.  I tried various vanity publishers who were looking for a lot of money to publish the book but as I said I wanted to get the book out there so I was prepared to take the risk until I found out about Feedaread Publishing; a publishing company that will publish your book to professional standard, all for nothing. I didn’t discover this publishing company on my own bat, it was recommended to me by another Feedaread author; Gemma Mawdsley whose books ‘Death Cry’ and ‘The Paupers Graveyard’ you may be familiar with.

I published my first children’s book ‘The Hippity Dippity Witch’ with Feedaread.com and I am very impressed with the quality of their service. On my next post I will talk about Feedaread in greater detail. Chow!
